New program helps lesbians become moms.

by Tara Murtha

Cast members of Showtime’s hit series The L-Word are coming to town to raise money for women’s services and programs at the Mazzoni Center, Philadelphia’s leading LGBT healthcare center. Mazzoni Executive Director Nurit Shein says that in addition to medical services like PAP smears and mammograms, the new funds will support a progressive collaboration with Pacific Reproductive Services, a lesbian-owned sperm bank founded in California in 1984 to serve the reproductive needs of women planning alternative families.

Pacific has the nation’s largest selection of “willing to be known” donors, which means that at 18 the child can discover his or her biological and cultural heritage, an important option for many lesbian parents. [read more]

The Soft Side of Pam Grier

As one of the most iconic actresses of all time, the beautiful Pam Grier of "Foxy Brown" fame, has most recently been seen on TV hits like "The L Word" and "Law & Order: SVU." Most famous for portraying powerful, serious characters, Grier is currently playing a more lighthearted role in her new Hallmark Channel TV movie, "Ladies of the House," premiering this Saturday, October 18 at 9 p.m. E.T.

"Ladies of the House" is the story of three friends, the always loud and comical Birdie (Grier), down-to-earth Rose (Florence Henderson), and the wealthy and successful Elizabeth (Donna Mills), who are asked by their pastor to renovate a run-down house that was donated to church-- the proceeds of the sale would allow the church to keep its daycare center open. In addition to learning how to fix up the house (none of them has any experience in home improvement), each woman has their own marital issues at home to deal with. [read more]

All the Girls Love Alice and Leisha Hailey Too!

It’s six years into playing sexy, quirky Alice Pieszecki on The L Word and Leisha Hailey, a bonified double threat of an actress and rock star graced with cracker jack comic timing and on-screen pathos, is an unstoppable rising star.

While Showtime’s breakout little lesbian-themed show that could is gearing up for it’s sixth and final season Hailey’s just getting started with the announcement this summer that Alice, one of the show’s most beloved characters, is slated to headline a yet-to-be-named spin-off. But it’s really no surprise that Hailey -- who wowed the girls early on in her acting career playing the adorable, pink-haired musician in the indie flick All Over Me -- and Alice, who’s character already spawned the siteOurChart.com, would get land the spin-off.

This year has been a busy one for Hailey, who along with her Uh Huh Her band mate Camila Grey, released their first full-length album Common Reaction in late August, while Hailey was already in Vancouver shooting The L Word. Before The L Word had finished shooting the upcoming season -- they’re just wrapping up -- Hailey was home in Los Angeles for a quick visit and then off on a whirlwind tour with Uh Huh Her beginning in San Diego Oct. 17. The premium cable network announced Wednesday (Oct. 1) that the final season of "The L Word" will be paired with a comedy block of "United States of Tara" and the second season of "Secret Diary of a Call Girl."

Sunday nights will lead off with the sixth season of "The L Word" at 9 p.m. ET. Core cast members Jennifer Beals, Leisha Hailey, Katherine Moennig, Laurel Holloman, Mia Kirshner, Rachel Shelley, Daniela Sea and Pam Grier will return for the eight-episode closing run.

Pam Grier Listens to Colorados Frog Symphony

Colorado actress Pam Grier hears a frog symphony — in her new movie “Ladies of the House” and at her simple spread near Colorado Springs.

She’s currently shooting “The L Word” in Canada — and she called in to explain what the heck a frog symphony is.

“You go out to the swamp and listen to the frogs. It’s a metaphor for finding a place that takes you away from the harshness and coldness and pain of life. It gives you a comfort zone.”
“Ladies of the House” stars Grier, Donna Mills and Florence Henderson and airs Oct. 18 on the Hallmark Channel.

That’s a long way from “The L Word.” Oh yeah.

And her Colorado home is a long way from Hollywood — just how she likes it.
